Sidor Steel Plant (Venezuela)

Weather…

Siderúrgica del Orinoco (Sidor) is Venezuela's largest steel complex and one of the most significant in Latin America. It is located in the Matanzas industrial zone of Ciudad Guayana, Bolívar State. The facility was established in the 1950s to exploit the rich iron ore deposits of the nearby Cerro Bolívar region. Sidor relies on the direct reduction of iron ore using natural gas, a process favored by the abundance of local resources. The complex includes electric arc furnaces, continuous casting machines, and rolling mills for the production of flat and long steel products. Historically, the privatization in 1997 and subsequent re-nationalization in 2008 by the Hugo Chávez government marked a major turning point for the company. Geographically, Sidor benefits from its location on the Orinoco River, which facilitates exports via ocean-going vessels. As the backbone of the Venezuelan construction and manufacturing industries, Sidor remains a symbol of the nation's industrial self-reliance.
