Pahlavan Mahmud Mausoleum (Uzbekistan)

Weather…

The Pahlavan Mahmud Mausoleum in Khiva is the burial place of the poet, philosopher, and legendary wrestler who lived in the 13th and 14th centuries. Revered as the patron saint of Khiva, his tomb evolved over centuries into the religious heart of the historic Itchan Kala district. The current structure, characterized by its prominent turquoise dome, was largely rebuilt between 1810 and 1825 during the reign of Muhammad Rahim Khan I. The interior is renowned for its exquisite blue-and-white majolica tiles, which cover nearly every surface and feature intricate Persian calligraphy. Beside the main burial chamber, the complex includes a mosque, a hospice for pilgrims, and the tombs of subsequent Khivan Khans. It stands as one of the most magnificent examples of 19th-century Khivan architecture. The spiritual ambiance and the artisan perfection of its decorations make it one of the most significant pilgrimage sites in Central Asia.
