Ichan Kala (Uzbekistan)

Weather…

Ichan Kala is the walled inner town of the city of Khiva and was the first site in Uzbekistan to be inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1990. The massive brick walls, standing over 10 meters tall, stretch for about 2.2 kilometers and enclose an area of approximately 26 hectares. Within these fortifications lie over 50 historic monuments and 250 traditional dwellings, mostly dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. Notable landmarks include the unfinished turquoise-tiled Kalta Minor minaret, the Juma Mosque with its 213 intricately carved wooden pillars, and the ornate Tash-Hauli Palace. For centuries, the city served as a major trading post on the Silk Road and was the administrative center of the Khanate of Khiva. Today, it remains one of the best-preserved examples of medieval Islamic urban planning in Central Asia, effectively operating as a vast open-air museum of regional history.
