Katonga Wildlife Reserve (Uganda)

Weather…

The Katonga Wildlife Reserve, located in western Uganda, is a unique protected area characterized by its swampy landscape dominated by the Katonga River. Established in 1998, the reserve covers an area of 207 square kilometers, protecting a mosaic of wetlands, savanna, and riverine forest. This habitat diversity supports a rich array of wildlife, although many of the larger mammal populations were decimated by past poaching. Today, stocks are recovering, and the reserve is known for elusive species like the sitatunga antelope, which is perfectly adapted to the swampy terrain. Other residents include elephants, waterbucks, bushbucks, and over 150 bird species, with many water-dependent species. The reserve's distinctive feature lies in its activities: as roads are limited, exploration is often conducted on foot or by canoe, offering a more intimate and adventurous safari experience.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The best time to visit Katonga Wildlife Reserve is during the dry seasons from June to September and December to February. In these months, vegetation is less dense and animals are easier to spot, especially along the riverbanks.
🌅
Best time of day
Early morning and late afternoon are when sitatungas and elephants are most active, emerging from the reeds to feed. Dusk also provides good opportunities to spot waterbirds and hippos.
📜
Etiquette
Keep your distance from elephants and hippos, as they can be very dangerous, especially with calves. Leaving the vehicle is only allowed at designated spots to avoid conflicts.
🎒
What to bring
Binoculars are essential to spot the shy sitatungas hidden in the reeds. Wellington boots are useful if you have the chance to go on a guided walk along the wetlands.
🧭
Getting there
Katonga Wildlife Reserve is located about 60 kilometres west of Kampala and is accessible via the well-maintained road to Mityana. The last stretch is an unpaved track that is passable with a normal car in the dry season.
🦌
What to expect
Sitatungas are very shy animals and spend much time hidden in the reeds - take your time and stay quiet. A boat ride on the Katonga River increases the chances of spotting these rare antelopes.
