Bigo Bya Mugenyi (Uganda)

Weather…

Bigo Bya Mugenyi is a monumental archaeological site located in Ssembabule District, consisting of a complex system of earthworks and trenches. These fortifications are attributed to the legendary Bachwezi dynasty, who ruled over the Empire of Kitara between the 13th and 16th centuries. The system extends over a length of more than 10 kilometers and is believed to have served both defensive purposes and the protection of livestock from wild animals and raiders. The complex is surrounded by deep ditches, some of which were carved into hard rock, indicating a sophisticated level of organization and engineering. For the local population, the site remains sacred to this day; there are numerous shrines where offerings are made to the Bachwezi spirits. Despite its immense historical significance, the site is largely undeveloped, offering researchers valuable insights into the pre-colonial history of East Africa. Visitors often must follow traditional protocols to show respect to the ancestors.
