Kasensero Port is located in Kyotera District in southwestern Uganda on Lake Victoria, near the border with Tanzania. The site gained global recognition in 1982 when the first HIV/AIDS cases in Uganda were clinically identified here, making the port a significant location for medical history research. Beyond this historical turning point, Kasensero is a highly active fishing port that supplies a large portion of the national fish demand. Geographic isolation long led to infrastructure neglect, but in recent years, there have been increased investments in sanitation facilities and road construction. The port serves as a lifeline for the local community and an important trade hub for goods transported across the lake to Tanzania. The socio-economic dynamics of the settlement are strongly influenced by the rhythm of the fishing season and fluctuating lake water levels. Today, Kasensero is supported by various NGOs and government programs to sustainably improve local living conditions.

Kasensero Port is one of the largest and busiest fishing ports on Lake Victoria in Uganda. It serves as a major transshipment point for fish and trade goods near the Tanzanian border.

The port area is partly open to the public, where you can observe the fishing boats and bustling trade. The actual cold stores and processing facilities are usually off-limits to visitors.

Where to view it

The best views are from the wooden pier that stretches far into the lake, offering a view of all port activity. From the surrounding hills, you get a scenic view of the harbor basin and boats.

Fresh Nile perch and tilapia are sold directly from the boats at chilled stalls. Dried and smoked fish are also available, a typical product of the region, often traded in large quantities.
