Mount Moroto (Uganda)

Weather…

Mount Moroto is an extinct volcano located near the town of Moroto in the Karamoja region of northeastern Uganda. It reaches a height of 3,083 meters and dominates the landscape of the semi-arid plains. The mountain is part of the same volcanic complex as Mount Elgon and Mount Kadam, and its formation is linked to the tectonic activity of the Great Rift Valley. The slopes of Mount Moroto were once densely forested, but intense deforestation for firewood and charcoal has significantly reduced the forest cover. However, remnants of montane forest and savanna woodland still exist, providing an important refuge for wildlife in the region. The area around the mountain is inhabited by the Karamojong people, a pastoralist community whose way of life is closely tied to livestock. The mountain is an important water source for the region, as its slopes capture rainfall that drains into the surrounding plains. Conservation efforts are focused on reforestation and promoting sustainable livelihoods to reduce pressure on the mountain's natural resources.
