Yumbe serves as the administrative capital of Yumbe District in the West Nile sub-region of northwestern Uganda. The town gained historical prominence following the Yumbe Peace Agreement of 2002, which effectively ended a long-running insurgency between the government and the UNRF II rebel group. Geographically, Yumbe is situated on the West Nile Plateau, characterized by a semi-arid climate that nevertheless supports diverse agricultural outputs. Tobacco farming is the dominant commercial activity, complemented by the production of staple grains such as millet and sorghum. The demographic profile is primarily composed of the Aringa people, who maintain a distinct language and strong cultural identity. Today, Yumbe is a focal point for international humanitarian efforts as the district hosts one of the largest refugee populations in Africa, mainly from South Sudan. This influx has spurred significant expansion in local infrastructure, including health centers and schools, to serve both host and refugee communities.
