Kaçkar Mountains (Turkey)

Weather…

The Kaçkar Mountains are part of the Pontic range in northeastern Turkey, stretching along the Black Sea coast. The highest peak is Kaçkar Kavrun Dağı, reaching an elevation of 3,937 meters. The region is renowned for its extraordinary biodiversity, dense cloud forests, and numerous glacial lakes formed during the last Ice Age. The mountains experience a humid maritime climate, resulting in lush vegetation and a wide variety of endemic plant species. In 1994, a central portion of the massif was designated as a National Park to preserve its unique alpine landscape. Culturally, the region is defined by the traditional high-pasture pastoralism of local communities, particularly the Hemşin and Laz people. For mountain sports enthusiasts, the Kaçkar Mountains offer challenging trekking routes, technical climbing, and world-class heliskiing during the winter season.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Access is usually through Rize or Artvin. From there, steep and winding roads lead to mountain villages like Ayder, which serve as starting points for treks into the high alpine regions.
📅
Best season
The best hiking season is from June to September when the snow has melted. In other months, many paths can be impassable, and the Black Sea weather is frequently rainy and unpredictable.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The terrain is characterized by dense forests, alpine pastures, and rugged glacial peaks. Paths are often stony and steep, but offer spectacular views of waterfalls and high-altitude lakes.
🎒
What to bring
Waterproof hiking boots and high-quality rain gear are essential due to the humid climate. Trekking poles and a warm sleeping bag for overnight stays on the alpine pastures are advisable.

Parking
Parking is available in villages like Ayder or Yaylalar. Since space is limited in the narrow mountain valleys, it is often recommended to leave cars in the valley and use local shared taxis.

⏱️
Time needed
Short hikes to waterfalls typically take 3 to 5 hours. However, for a complete traverse of the range or summit attempts, a duration of 3 to 7 days should be planned for the expedition.
