Gonio Fortress
Gonio Fortress, historically known as Apsaros, is a well-preserved Roman fortification situated on the Black Sea coast of Georgia, near the Turkish border. Established in the 1st century AD, it served as a vital strategic, military, and economic center for the Roman Empire in the Colchis region. The fortress walls enclose a rectangular area of approximately 4.7 hectares and feature 18 surviving towers out of the original 22. Historical records mention that the site once housed a Roman theater and a hippodrome, reflecting its status as a significant regional hub. Over the centuries, control of the fortress passed from the Romans to the Byzantines, Genoese, and eventually the Ottomans in the 16th century. A major point of interest is the tradition that the grave of Saint Matthias, one of the twelve apostles, is located within the fortress grounds. Ongoing archaeological excavations have uncovered numerous artifacts, including gold coins, jewelry, and ancient Roman plumbing systems, making it a key site for understanding classical history in the Caucasus.
