Karagöl-Sahara National Park (Turkey)

Weather…

Karagöl-Sahara National Park is located in the Şavşat district of Artvin Province in northeastern Turkey and was established in 1994. The park is composed of two non-contiguous sections: the Karagöl sector, featuring an impressive landslide-dammed lake, and the Sahara Plateau. Karagöl Lake was formed when a massive landslide blocked the valley, creating a deep water body now surrounded by dense spruce and fir forests. The Sahara Plateau is renowned for its vast alpine meadows and traditional high-altitude pastoralism, hosting annual cultural festivals. Covering 3,251 hectares, the national park lies within the Lesser Caucasus mountain range and is characterized by its high biodiversity and numerous endemic plant species. The area is particularly famous for its dramatic autumn foliage, as the deciduous trees surrounding the lake turn into brilliant shades of orange and red. Situated at elevations between 1,700 and 1,800 meters, the park provides a cool climate and pristine natural environments that attract hikers, photographers, and nature enthusiasts from around the globe.

Getting there
Located within the photogenic Artvin province, the park is typically reached via winding mountain roads; driving requires sustained caution due to narrow and steep sections.

Best season
The warm summer months are generally handy for visiting both the lake and the vast plateau, while winter often brings heavy, persistent snowfall that can restrict access entirely.

Visitors will frequently encounter a pleasant mix of gentle lakeside strolls and more demanding, rugged trails stretching across the vast alpine plateau and dense forested areas.
🎒
What to bring
Comfortable and sturdy walking boots, reliable waterproof rain gear, and warm insulating layers are heavily recommended, as the weather in the northeastern mountains changes rapidly.

Parking
Designated parking areas are usually readily available near the main lake and primary trailheads, but these prime spots can fill up incredibly quickly during peak summer weekends.

Safety
It is strongly advisable to keep a safe distance from steep edges on the high plateau, actively watch out for slippery tree roots in the forest, and be prepared for sudden heavy fog.
