Tamerza is a place of wild beauty located north of Tozeur, near the Algerian border. As the largest mountain oasis in the country, it features an impressive combination of rugged canyons and gentle streams. The Tamerza waterfall is a rare sight in this arid region and remains a popular spot for visitors to cool off. Especially atmospheric is the 'ghost town', the old village of Tamerza, which was abandoned after torrential rains in 1969. The deserted houses made of mud and stone blend almost completely with the surrounding mountain landscape, providing an excellent subject for photographers. Walking through the ruins gives a profound sense of timelessness. Nature lovers can explore the gorges where fossils are frequently found embedded in the rock. The best travel season is during the cooler months from November to March. Local markets offer hand-woven carpets and desert roses. Tamerza is best reached by 4x4 vehicle, often visited alongside the neighboring oases of Chebika and Mides.
