Chebika
Chebika, often called the 'Jewel of the Sun,' is one of the most impressive mountain oases in Tunisia. Located at the foot of the Djebel el Negueb mountains, it provides a spectacular contrast between barren, ochre-colored rocks and the lush green of palm groves. A small waterfall feeds a natural spring, creating a life-giving sanctuary at the desert's edge. The ruins of the old village, abandoned in 1969 after severe flooding, sit atop the cliffs and tell the story of the region's resilience. Today, Chebika is a popular destination for hikers who follow trails through narrow rock crevices to enjoy panoramic views over the Chott el Djerid salt flat. Its natural beauty is truly dramatic. The best time to visit is during winter or early spring to avoid the desert heat. Regionally, the sweet dates are world-renowned and a local staple. Chebika also served as a backdrop for films like 'The English Patient.' The oasis is best reached by 4x4 vehicle from Tozeur via a scenic mountain road.
