The Tozeur Palm Grove is one of the most impressive oases in the Sahara and a wonder of medieval engineering. It covers an area of approximately 1,000 hectares and is home to more than 200,000 date palms cultivated in a complex three-story farming system. Under the protective canopy of the palms grow fruit trees like pomegranates and figs, while vegetables and herbs thrive on the ground. The vital water comes from hundreds of springs, whose distribution has been regulated since the 13th century by an ingenious system attributed to the mathematician Ibn Chabbat. This system ensures that each plot receives precisely the required amount of water, which is essential for survival in this extremely dry environment. Tozeur is world-famous for the high-quality 'Deglet Nour' date variety, also known as the 'finger of light'. A walk or a carriage ride through the shaded paths of the palm grove reveals the lush vegetation and the timeless beauty of this green heart in the middle of the desert.
