Khao Lak
Khao Lak is the handy destination for travelers seeking relaxation away from mass tourism. The region consists of a series of coastal villages with wide, golden beaches bordering directly on dense rainforest. Khao Lak is best known as the gateway to the Similan and Surin Islands, which are among the best diving and snorkeling areas in the world. The crystal-clear water and colorful coral reefs attract underwater enthusiasts from all over the globe. On land, the Khao Lak-Lam Ru National Park has spectacular cliffs, waterfalls, and hiking trails through the jungle. A moving site is the Tsunami Memorial with Police Boat 813, which commemorates the events of 2004. In the evenings, local markets like the Bang Niang Market invite you to feast. Here you will find fresh seafood, Thai classics, and local handicrafts in a relaxed atmosphere. Getting there is easy: Khao Lak is located about 80 kilometers north of Phuket Airport and can be reached in just over an hour by taxi or bus. The best time to travel is from November to April, when the sea is calm and the island national parks are open. During the off-season (May to October), swimming in the sea is often dangerous, but the lush nature is at its greenest.
