The House of Wonders, or Beit al-Ajaib, is a landmark building in Stone Town, Zanzibar, constructed in 1883 under the orders of Sultan Barghash bin Said. Designed by a British marine engineer, it stood as the largest and tallest building in East Africa at the time of its completion. Its name derives from being the first building in the region to feature modern amenities such as an electric elevator and piped running water. The architectural style blends European, Indian, and Arabic elements, characterized by massive steel pillars and wide verandas offering harbor views. During the 1896 Anglo-Zanzibar War, the shortest war in history, the building sustained damage from British naval shelling. Following the 1964 revolution, it was used as a government office and later transformed into a museum of history and culture. Although sections of the building suffered a major collapse in 2020, it remains a central symbol of Zanzibar's cosmopolitan heritage and is undergoing reconstruction.
