Christ Church Cathedral (Tanzania)

Weather…

The Christ Church Cathedral stands as a poignant landmark in Zanzibar's Stone Town, representing the triumph of abolition over the horrors of the slave trade. Built from 1873 onwards by the Anglican Universities' Mission to Central Africa, the cathedral occupies the site of the world's last permanent slave market. In a powerful act of symbolic reclamation, the high altar was positioned precisely over the spot where the market's central whipping post once stood. The building's unique design reflects a fusion of Neo-Gothic features with local Arabic architectural styles, constructed primarily from coral stone with a distinctive vaulted roof. Inside, a cross carved from the wood of the tree in Zambia under which David Livingstone’s heart was buried serves as a memorial to the famed missionary. Outside, the 'Memory of the Slaves' monument features lifelike sculptures in a holding pit, serving as a solemn reminder of the site's tragic past. Today, the cathedral is a site of active worship and a crucial educational hub for understanding East African history.
