Wanyamwezi Forest (Tanzania)

Weather…

The Wanyamwezi Forest, located in the central highlands of Tanzania around the Tabora region, is a significant part of the Miombo woodland ecosystem. This dry forest area is historically closely linked to the Nyamwezi people, who were known in the 19th century as influential traders and caravan leaders between the coast and the Great Lakes. The vegetation consists primarily of Brachystegia trees, which are adapted to distinct dry seasons. The region is a hub for traditional beekeeping and provides a substantial portion of Tanzania's honey production. Despite the poor soils, the forest provides habitat for specialized animal species such as sable antelopes and Lichtenstein's hartebeests. Today, the area faces challenges from charcoal production and the expansion of tobacco plantations, making the protection of the remaining forest areas increasingly urgent.
