Tabora is a city steeped in history in the heart of Tanzania and serves as a major railway junction for the Central Line. Founded around 1850 by Arab and Swahili traders under the name Kazeh, the city quickly became a pivotal hub for the ivory and slave trades during the 19th century. Tabora gained further historical significance as a crucial stopping point for famous European explorers, including David Livingstone and Henry Morton Stanley. The city is noted for its Swahili-Arabic architecture and houses the Livingstone Museum in Kwihara, where the explorer resided for a time. Geographically, Tabora lies in a flat savanna landscape and is currently a major center for tobacco cultivation, the region's primary export. The railway connection linking the city to Dar es Salaam in the east and Kigoma on Lake Tanganyika in the west remains the lifeblood of the local economy.
