Tanga is a historic port city on the Indian Ocean in northeastern Tanzania, situated near the Kenyan border. It was founded in 1888 as an administrative center for the German East Africa Company and served as a vital export terminal for sisal, which once made the city highly prosperous. Tanga is noted for its colonial architecture and relaxed coastal atmosphere. Among the most significant attractions in the vicinity are the Amboni Caves, the most extensive limestone cave system in East Africa, and the 15th-century Tongoni Ruins. The city was the terminus of the Usambara Railway, built to connect inland plantations with the coast. Today, Tanga remains a key industrial hub and serves as the gateway to the Tanga Coelacanth Marine Park, where rare prehistoric fish have been discovered. The city has maintained its status as Tanzania's second-largest seaport, although it is often overshadowed by Dar es Salaam.
