Kondoa Rock-Art Sites (Tanzania)

Weather…

The Kondoa Rock-Art Sites in central Tanzania represent one of the most extensive collections of prehistoric art in Africa and have been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2006. Scattered across 2,336 square kilometers on the slopes of the Masai Escarpment, more than 150 rock shelters contain paintings. These artworks were created over several millennia by hunter-gatherer communities and later by agro-pastoralist groups. The motifs range from naturalistic animal depictions to abstract geometric patterns and stylized human figures. The site retains spiritual significance for the local population today, as some shelters are still used for traditional healing and rain-making ceremonies. Kondoa provides an extraordinary window into the cultural and religious development of East Africa over a vast span of time.
