Tongoni Ruins (Tanzania)

Weather…

The Tongoni Ruins, situated about 20 kilometers south of Tanga, are the remnants of a once-flourishing city-state dating back to the 15th century. Tongoni was a significant hub of the Shirazi culture and played a crucial role in the gold and ivory trade along the Swahili coast. The archaeological site includes the ruins of a large Friday mosque and over 40 tombs, among them the distinctive pillar tombs that are hallmark features of Indian Ocean architecture. Vasco da Gama visited the settlement in 1498 and documented the community's advanced agriculture and general prosperity. By the 17th century, Portuguese interference and the subsequent rise of Omani Arabs led to the town's gradual decline. Today, the ruins are a national cultural monument illustrating the fusion of Persian influences with local African traditions. The site provides vital data on urban planning and religious practices in the pre-colonial era of East Africa.
