Kisite Mpunguti
Kisite Mpunguti Marine National Park, located off Kenya's southern coast near the Tanzanian border, is widely regarded as one of the best snorkeling and diving spots in East Africa. The park encompasses the small Kisite island and the Mpunguti islands, surrounded by a pristine coral reef teeming with marine life. Its crystal-clear turquoise waters and white sandy banks provide a postcard-first-rate setting for a day trip. The undeniable highlight of a visit is the chance to see wild dolphins, which frequent the park’s protected waters almost daily. Divers and snorkelers can encounter sea turtles, rays, and, during the migration season from August to October, humpback whales and whale sharks. The coral gardens are exceptionally well-preserved, hosting hundreds of colorful tropical fish species. Because the park is strictly managed, the visibility often reaches 30 meters, offering an unparalleled underwater experience. Excursions typically depart from the fishing village of Shimoni on traditional wooden dhows. The peak season for visiting is from October to March when the seas are calmest and underwater clarity is at its best. Many tours include a visit to the historic Shimoni slave caves and a traditional Swahili seafood lunch on Wasini Island. High-SPF sunscreen and waterproof cameras are essential for this unforgettable maritime adventure.
