Villanueva de la Serena is a major town in the province of Badajoz, in the Spanish region of Extremadura. Together with the neighbouring city of Don Benito, it forms an important urban and economic core in the Guadiana river valley. The city is a leading centre for agriculture, especially for the cultivation of tomatoes, fruit, and rice, which shapes the landscape and the local economy. The city's history is rich and diverse; it is the birthplace of Pedro de Valdivia, the conquistador who founded Santiago de Chile. Culturally, Villanueva has much to offer. The Plaza de España is a magnificent square surrounded by historic buildings like the Town Hall and the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción. The city is famous for its animated festivals. Particularly noteworthy are the Semana Santa (Holy Week) with its solemn processions, and the 'Día de la Tortilla' (Tortilla Day), a unique festival where locals go out to the countryside to eat tortilla de patatas together just before Lent begins. Gastronomy is based on high-quality local produce. Dishes featuring tomatoes, lamb, and the famous Iberian ham are omnipresent. A visit in spring is particularly appealing, when the fruit trees are in full bloom. Villanueva de la Serena is well-connected by road, located on the EX-A2 motorway. It is an authentic piece of Extremadura, offering a mix of history, culture, and agricultural tradition, off the beaten tourist track.
