Qixing Mountain (Taiwan)

Weather…

Qixing Mountain, or Seven Star Mountain, is the highest peak in Yangmingshan National Park and the highest dormant volcano in Taiwan, reaching an elevation of 1,120 meters. Located in the northern part of the Taipei Basin, the mountain was formed by the volcanic activity of the Tatun Volcano Group roughly 700,000 years ago. Its name derives from the seven small peaks that constitute the main summit ridge, which locals thought resembled the Big Dipper constellation. The area is geologically active, featuring numerous sulfur fumaroles, hot springs, and post-volcanic craters that emit a distinct sulfuric odor, particularly at the Xiaoyoukeng site. Hikers often follow the well-maintained trails through arrow bamboo and silvergrass to reach the summit, where they are rewarded with panoramic views of Taipei City and the North Coast. Historically, the area was significant for sulfur mining during the Qing Dynasty and the Japanese colonial period, and today it serves as a vital ecological and recreational landmark for the capital region.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The starting point is typically the national park visitor center, which is frequently reached by direct buses from the capital. From there, well-marked trails lead toward the volcano.
📅
Best season
The most favorable time for hiking is normally during the cooler spring and autumn months. In autumn, the landscape is often beautifully dominated by blooming silver grass.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The terrain largely consists of well-maintained but often very steep stone steps. The volcanic landscape requires a solid baseline of physical fitness for the continuous ascent.
🎒
What to bring
Sturdy, slip-resistant footwear and layered, weather-proof clothing are absolutely essential. Due to unpredictable mountain weather, reliable rain gear should always be in your pack.
🅿️
Parking
Official parking lots are usually found near the main park entrances and visitor centers. However, experience shows that these areas tend to fill up very quickly on weekends.
⚠️
Safety
Always stay on the formally marked trails, as hot fumaroles and sulfurous gases can vent in the area. The stone steps can also become extremely slippery when wet or misty.
⏱️
Time needed
For a complete ascent to the summit and the subsequent descent, you should typically plan for about three to four hours, depending heavily on your individual walking pace.
