Mausoleum of Saladin (Syria)

Weather…

The Mausoleum of Saladin is located just northwest of the Umayyad Mosque in the Old City of Damascus. It serves as the final resting place of the legendary Sultan Salah ad-Din al-Ayyubi, who passed away in Damascus in 1193. The structure was commissioned by his son, al-Afdal, and further developed by his brother, al-Adil. The architecture is modest yet dignified, featuring a prominent dome and interior walls adorned with exquisite 17th-century Ottoman faience tiles. Inside the burial chamber, two sarcophagi are displayed: the original one, crafted from intricately carved wood, and a second one made of white marble, which was a gift from German Emperor Wilhelm II in 1898. The Emperor presented the marble sarcophagus and a silver lamp to honor Saladin's chivalry and historical legacy. The mausoleum is not only a site of mourning but a potent national symbol representing victory over the Crusaders and the unification of the Arab world. It remains one of the most revered historical sites in Syria, attracting pilgrims and scholars who seek to pay their respects to one of history's most respected military commanders.
