Säntis (Switzerland)

Weather…

At 2,502 meters, the Säntis is the highest peak in the Alpstein massif and a prominent landmark of northeastern Switzerland. It marks the border between the cantons of Appenzell Ausserrhoden, Appenzell Innerrhoden, and St. Gallen. The Säntis is world-renowned for its vantage point, which on clear days gives a view into six different countries: Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein, France, and Italy. Geologically, the mountain is composed of Helvetic limestone and is part of a complex folded nappe system. The summit hosts a vital weather station that has been in operation since 1882, along with a striking 123-meter-tall telecommunications tower. Since 1935, a cable car from Schwägalp has provided easy access to the top, making it a major tourist attraction. The mountain is also known for its extreme weather, holding records for high precipitation and lightning strikes in Switzerland. The surrounding Alpstein range is a hiker's paradise, characterized by steep karst formations and alpine meadows.

Terrain & paths
The terrain is high alpine and very rocky, which requires sure-footedness, especially on the hiking trails. On the summit plateau, there are well-developed viewing platforms for all visitors.
