Grossmünster (Switzerland)

Weather…

The Grossmünster is one of the most significant churches in Zurich and serves as an established landmark of the city on the banks of the Limmat. The current building was constructed between 1100 and 1220 in Romanesque style and, according to legend, stands on the spot where Charlemagne discovered the graves of the city's patron saints, Felix and Regula. The church's prominent twin towers dominate the Zurich skyline and only received their characteristic domed roofs in the 18th century following a fire. Historically, the Grossmünster gained worldwide importance during the Reformation, which began here under the leadership of Huldrych Zwingli in the 16th century. Inside the church, visitors are impressed by modern artworks, such as Augusto Giacometti's colorful stained-glass windows from 1933 and the more recent agate windows by Sigmar Polke. The crypt and the cloister with its Romanesque capitals are valuable witnesses to Switzerland's medieval architectural history.
