Tresticklan National Park (Sweden)

Weather…

Tresticklan National Park is situated in northwestern Dalsland on the Norwegian border, preserving one of the largest contiguous areas of primeval forest in southern Sweden. The landscape is characterized by a striking rift-valley topography, featuring long, narrow north-south ridges separated by deep valleys and lakes. This geological structure was formed by ancient tectonic shifts and further sculpted by glacial activity during the last ice age. Spanning nearly 2900 hectares, the park is defined by its sparse but ecologically significant vegetation, primarily consisting of old-growth pines and lichen-covered ground. For hikers, the park provides a trail system through a remote wilderness where lynx, wolves, and capercaillies can occasionally be spotted. The complete absence of roads and modern forestry history gives Tresticklan a unique wilderness atmosphere within an otherwise heavily developed region of the country.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Tresticklan National Park is accessible from the entrance at Råbocken on the Swedish side, near the border with Norway. To reach the park, you will need a car to navigate the rural roads leading to the trailhead, as there is no regular public transport to this remote forest.
📅
Best season
The best hiking conditions are found from late spring to autumn when the paths through the ridges and valleys are most accessible. Winter can be very beautiful with snow-covered trees, but the trails become more difficult to follow and require good navigation skills.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The terrain is unique for its series of parallel ridges and narrow valleys, creating a rhythmic landscape of ups and downs. This pristine forest area features a sense of true wilderness, with rocky ground and narrow paths that wind through the ancient and untouched trees.
🎒
What to bring
Waterproof hiking boots with good grip are essential for the rocky ridges and potentially boggy valleys. It is also wise to carry a compass or GPS, as the repetitive nature of the parallel ridges can sometimes make orientation challenging for those unfamiliar with the area.
🅿️
Parking
A designated parking area is located at the Råbocken entrance, which serves as the primary gateway for visitors. The parking lot is usually sufficient for the number of visitors this quiet park receives, but it is still a good idea to arrive early during summer weekends.
⚠️
Safety
Ensure you have enough supplies, as there are no facilities or water points within the pristine forest area. Since the park sits on the border with Norway, be mindful of your location and the weather forecast, as the remote nature of the terrain means help is far away.
⏱️
Time needed
A typical hike through the main trails of Tresticklan takes about four to six hours to complete. This allows enough time to reach the Norwegian border and back, while enjoying the silence and the unusual geological structure of the parallel forest ridges.
