Tännforsen (Sweden)

Weather…

Tännforsen is recognized as Sweden's largest waterfall by water volume, located approximately 22 kilometers west of the mountain resort Åre in Jämtland. With a drop of 38 meters and an impressive width of 60 meters, it marks the point where the Indalsälven river plunges into Lake Noren. The water flow fluctuates significantly with the seasons, reaching its peak intensity during the spring snowmelt when the roar and mist are most powerful. In winter, Tännforsen transforms into a frozen spectacle, as massive ice formations and ice caves take shape while the water continues to flow beneath the crust. The area surrounding the waterfall is a designated nature reserve, hosting a unique microclimate that supports rare mosses and lichens that depend on the constant humidity. Well-maintained trails allow visitors to view the fall from several vantage points throughout the year. Historically, the site gained early popularity as a tourist destination, leading to the construction of a tourist station as early as 1906.
