Store Mosse National Park (Sweden)

Weather…

Store Mosse National Park is located in the Småland province of southern Sweden and covers about 77 square kilometers, making it the largest continuous mire area in Sweden south of Lapland. Established in 1982, the park protects a vast high bog ecosystem and its diverse avian inhabitants. The landscape formed after the last Ice Age as a large post-glacial lake gradually filled with peat over millennia. The heart of the park is Lake Kävsjön, widely regarded as one of Sweden's premier bird lakes, attracting thousands of cranes and other waterfowl during migration seasons. The scenery features wide-open bogs, sandy ridges with pine forests known as "rocknar," and quaking mires. Its flora includes specialized species such as sundews, cranberries, and cottongrass. Hikers can enjoy approximately 40 kilometers of marked trails, many of which utilize wooden boardwalks to allow safe passage across the wet peatlands. The modern Naturum Store Mosse visitor center provides detailed information on the bog's formation and gives excellent birdwatching platforms. Since 1974, the area has also been designated as a Ramsar site of international importance.
