Söderköping is among Sweden's best-preserved medieval towns, located in the province of Östergötland. During the Middle Ages, it functioned as a vital commercial port and a site for royal coronations, owing to its proximity to the Baltic coast before post-glacial rebound altered the shoreline. In 1595, the town hosted the historic Diet of Söderköping, where Duke Charles was appointed regent of Sweden. In modern times, it is most famous as the eastern gateway to the Göta Canal, with the nearby Mem lock connecting the waterway to the sea. The town's architectural heritage is highlighted by St. Laurentius Church, dating from the 13th century, and the Söderköpings Brunn spa, which has operated since 1774. Its cobblestone streets and well-maintained historical structures provide a vivid window into Swedish urban life from centuries past.
