Njupeskär Waterfall (Sweden)

Weather…

Njupeskär is the highest waterfall in Sweden, located within the Fulufjället National Park in the province of Dalarna, near the Norwegian border. With a total height of 93 meters, the waters of the Njupån stream plunge over a distinct sandstone ledge, featuring a free fall of 70 meters into a narrow canyon. Geologically, the canyon was formed by millennia of erosion, revealing layers of Precambrian sandstone. During winter, the waterfall often freezes completely, creating a massive ice pillar that attracts ice climbers from across the region. The surrounding national park is also home to the world's oldest known individual clonal tree, a Norway spruce named 'Old Tjikko', with a root system estimated to be over 9,500 years old. A well-maintained hiking trail leads visitors through ancient forests directly to the base of the falls.
