Lund Cathedral (Sweden)

Weather…

Lund Cathedral, consecrated in 1145, is widely considered the finest example of Romanesque architecture in Scandinavia. Built from sandstone, it originally served as the seat of the Archbishop of Lund, who at the time held ecclesiastical authority over all of Scandinavia. The cathedral's striking twin towers were extensively rebuilt in the 19th century by Helgo Zettervall in a Neo-Romanesque style. One of its most famous features is the astronomical clock, 'Horologium Mirabile Lundense,' which dates back to the 14th century and performs a mechanical display with the Three Wise Men twice daily. The cathedral's crypt has remained virtually unchanged since the 12th century and houses the famous carvings of Giant Finn, who, according to local legend, built the church. Lund was a vital religious and political center of Denmark until the province of Scania was ceded to Sweden in 1658. Today, it stands as Sweden's most visited church and a major landmark of Nordic medieval history.
