Kebnekaise Northern Peak (Sweden)

Weather…

The Kebnekaise Northern Peak (Nordtoppen) has been officially recognized as the highest point in Sweden since 2019, following the height reduction of the glaciated Southern Peak due to climate change. Unlike its southern neighbor, the Northern Peak consists of solid bedrock, giving it a stable elevation of 2096.8 meters above sea level. While located on the same mountain massif as the Southern Peak, reaching Nordtoppen is significantly more challenging and often requires alpine equipment and experience in ridge scrambling. The route involves traversing narrow, exposed ridges that can be hazardous during poor weather or high winds. Geologically, the peak is part of the Caledonian orogeny and is primarily composed of hard amphibolite rock. Because of its new status as the nation's highest summit, it increasingly attracts experienced mountaineers seeking a technical challenge and the grandeur of the high Arctic. The view from Nordtoppen provides an unobstructed gaze across surrounding glaciers and the pristine wilderness of Swedish Lapland.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Access generally follows the same approach routes as the southern peak, followed by an extremely demanding ridge traverse heading directly northwards.
📅
Best season
An attempt is almost exclusively undertaken during the summer months, when the icy conditions along the exposed ridge are most likely to be manageable.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The terrain here is dominated by solid rock, steep cliff faces, and a highly exposed ridge walk that absolutely requires a total lack of vertigo.
🎒
What to bring
Beyond standard mountaineering gear, the traverse often requires harnesses, helmets, and belay materials to effectively prevent potentially fatal falls.
🅿️
Parking
The same parking system applies as for the rest of the massif, which typically involves leaving cars at the far end of the road down in Nikkaluokta.
⚠️
Safety
The connecting ridge between the peaks is extremely narrow and dangerous; strong winds or sudden icing make the endeavor genuinely life-threatening.
⏱️
Time needed
Those heading to the northern peak from the southern one must typically plan for an additional one to two hours of extremely focused climbing time.
