Karlshamn is located in Blekinge County on the southern coast of Sweden and was founded in 1664 by order of King Charles X Gustav to serve as a strategic export harbor. The town was originally named Bodekull before being renamed in honor of the monarch. Karlshamn has historical ties to the production of Swedish punch and vegetable oils, with the AarhusKarlshamn (AAK) company remaining a major industrial force today. The city was a significant departure point for Swedish emigrants heading to America in the 19th century, a legacy honored by the 'Emigrants' monument in the harbor park. The Blekinge archipelago lies just offshore, offering attractions such as the Kastellet island with its historic fortress ruins. Each year, the town hosts the 'Östersjöfestivalen' (Baltic Sea Festival), one of Sweden's largest public festivals celebrating maritime culture. Today, Karlshamn's deep-water port is one of the nation's key logistics hubs for forestry products and vehicle imports. With around 20,000 residents, the city has a high standard of living amidst forests, the sea, and modern industry.
