Gammelstad Church Town near Luleå is the best-preserved example of a traditional Scandinavian church town, earning it a place on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1996. The site features a late-Gothic stone church from the 15th century, encircled by 424 red timber cottages. These huts were built by farmers from the surrounding vast countryside to provide lodging during Sunday services and religious festivals, as the distances made it impossible to return home the same day. Gammelstad was the original site of Luleå until 1649, when post-glacial land uplift made the harbor too shallow, leading the city to relocate to its current coastal position. The settlement remains a living monument to Northern Swedish culture and social structure. The cottages are still privately owned and maintained under strict conservation guidelines. Beyond its religious function, Gammelstad was historically a vital hub for markets and communal gatherings for the rural population.
