Drottningholm Palace Theatre (Sweden)

Weather…

The Drottningholm Palace Theatre, built in 1766 for Queen Lovisa Ulrika, is one of the world's best-preserved Baroque theatres. Designed by architect Carl Fredrik Adelcrantz, it replaced an earlier structure that had been destroyed by fire. The theatre's most remarkable feature is its original stage machinery, which remains fully operational today, including devices for creating wave effects, thunder sounds, and moving deities across the stage. Following the death of King Gustav III in 1792, the theatre was forgotten for over a century, which inadvertently ensured its preservation. It was rediscovered in 1921 by literary historian Agne Beijer, who initiated its restoration. The theatre features exceptional acoustics and uses hand-painted backdrops, the originals of which are now archived while replicas are used for performances. Since 1991, the theatre has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage list as part of the Drottningholm ensemble, and it continues to host professional opera productions every summer.
