Sanganeb Atoll, located in the Red Sea about 30 kilometers off the coast of Port Sudan, is the only true coral atoll in this marine region and a jewel of biodiversity. In 2016, it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site alongside Dungonab Bay. The atoll is characterized by its steep coral walls that rise from depths exceeding 800 meters, forming a distinctive ring-shaped lagoon. These reefs host over 300 species of fish, including sharks, manta rays, and dolphins, as well as an incredible diversity of hard and soft corals. A prominent landmark on the atoll is the lighthouse built by the British in 1906, which continues to guide maritime traffic toward Sudanese ports. Sanganeb is a premier destination for research divers and marine biologists, as its isolated position has helped preserve pristine marine ecosystems. It stands as a symbol for the urgent need to protect coral reefs against climate change and serves as a vital spawning ground for many commercially important fish species.
