Karari is a historically significant district located north of Omdurman in the Khartoum State of Sudan. The area achieved international notoriety as the site of the Battle of Karari (also known as the Battle of Omdurman) on September 2, 1898, where Anglo-Egyptian forces under Lord Kitchener defeated the army of the Mahdist leader Abdallahi ibn Muhammad. Geographically, Karari occupies a broad plain west of the Nile, much of which has now been absorbed into the rapidly expanding Khartoum metropolitan area. The district houses critical military institutions, including the Sudanese Military Academy, along with sprawling residential neighborhoods. Karari stands as a potent symbol of resistance against colonial rule and serves as a memorial to the thousands of Sudanese warriors who perished in the conflict. Today, it is a bustling integral part of Omdurman, blending its somber historical heritage with modern urban development.
