Omdurman is the most populous city in Sudan, situated on the western bank of the Nile, opposite the capital, Khartoum. The city rose to historical prominence in the 1880s when it was designated as the capital of the Mahdist State by the Mahdi, Muhammad Ahmad. The skyline is still defined by the Mahdi's Tomb and the Khalifa House, which now operates as a museum documenting the history of resistance against British colonial rule. A pivotal historical moment occurred at the Battle of Omdurman in 1898, where Anglo-Egyptian forces under Lord Kitchener dismantled the Mahdist state. Omdurman is widely regarded as the cultural heart of the nation, famous for its sprawling traditional souqs, most notably Souq Omdurman, which ranks among the largest in Africa. The city maintains a more traditional atmosphere compared to the modern developments in Khartoum and serves as a major center for religious brotherhoods, particularly Sufi orders. Economically, it is a vital hub for craftsmanship, gold trading, and livestock markets. As part of the tripartite metropolitan area, Omdurman is connected to the other sectors by several bridges, including the Omdurman and Shambat bridges.
