Al-Nilin Mosque (Sudan)

Weather…

The Al-Nilin Mosque, also known as the Mosque of the Two Niles, is an architectural masterpiece located in Omdurman on the western bank of the Nile, directly opposite the confluence of the Blue and White Niles. Built in the 1970s during the presidency of Gaafar Nimeiry, the mosque was officially inaugurated in 1975. Its most striking feature is the massive geodesic dome, which resembles a giant shell or a faceted diamond and covers the prayer hall without the need for internal support columns. This modern design was a significant departure from traditional Islamic architecture, representing Sudan's mid-20th-century modernization goals. Beyond its role as a house of worship, the mosque serves as an important center for religious education and community gathering. At night, the brilliantly illuminated structure reflects beautifully on the surface of the Nile, making it one of the most photographed landmarks in the Khartoum metropolitan area.
