Walls of Avila (Spain)

Weather…

The Walls of Ávila, constructed between the 11th and 14th centuries, constitute the best-preserved and most complete medieval defense system in Spain. This imposing Romanesque structure encloses the entire historic old town over a length of more than 2.5 kilometers, dominating the cityscape with its 88 massive semi-circular towers and 9 gates. Originally built to defend against Moorish attacks, the walls later served as a customs boundary and a symbol of wealth and power. Today, visitors can walk along large sections of the battlements, enjoying magnificent views of Ávila's rooftops and the surrounding Castilian landscape. The sight of the massive fortification is particularly spectacular at night when artful illumination bathes the ancient stones in a golden light.
