Torcal de Antequera (Spain)

Weather…

El Torcal de Antequera in the Andalusian province of Málaga is globally recognized as one of Europe's most dramatic and exceptional karst landscapes. The origins of this geological marvel trace back approximately 150 million years to the Jurassic period, when the entire region lay beneath a shallow sea, accumulating massive layers of marine sediment. Subsequent tectonic shifts forced this ancient seabed upward, creating towering limestone mountains. Over millions of years, the relentless forces of rain, ice, and wind eroded the soft limestone, intricately carving out a surreal labyrinth of stacked 'pancake' rocks, deep fissures, subterranean caves, and bizarre pillars. While navigating this otherworldly stone desert, situated at an altitude of over 1,000 meters, visitors frequently encounter resilient endemic plant species and agile Iberian ibex that thrive among the craggy boulders. Because of its outstanding geological significance, El Torcal was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2016, alongside the nearby Antequera Dolmens.
