The Torres de Serranos stand as one of the most significant landmarks in Valencia, serving as the main ceremonial entrance through the medieval city walls. Built between 1392 and 1398 by the master architect Pere Balaguer, they are widely regarded as one of the finest examples of Gothic military architecture in Europe. The structure features two massive polygonal towers joined by a central body, designed to impress visitors and demonstrate the city's status during the Late Middle Ages. Originally intended for defensive and ceremonial purposes, the towers were repurposed as a prison for the nobility from the late 16th century until 1887. During the Spanish Civil War, they played a crucial role in safeguarding national heritage by housing masterpieces evacuated from the Prado Museum in Madrid. Today, the towers are open to the public, providing elevated views of Valencia's historic center and the Turia Gardens. They remain a vital part of local tradition, serving as the stage for the annual opening ceremony of the world-famous Fallas festival.
