Puertollano Refinery
The Puertollano Refinery, located in the province of Ciudad Real, is a major industrial complex operated by Repsol and remains the only inland refinery in Spain. Its industrial roots date back to 19th-century coal mining, though its modern era began in 1952 with the production of lubricants and petrochemicals. The facility covers approximately 320 hectares and is supplied with crude oil via a 358-kilometer pipeline connecting it to the coastal ports of Cartagena and Rota. It functions as an integrated complex, producing a wide variety of fuels, bitumen, and chemical raw materials for the plastics industry. Its central location makes it a critical supply point for energy in Madrid and the Spanish heartland. In line with global energy trends, the site is currently being adapted for the production of green hydrogen and advanced biofuels to achieve net-zero emissions targets.
