Tablas de Daimiel National Park (Spain)

Weather…

The Tablas de Daimiel National Park in the region of Castile-La Mancha is the last and most valuable remnant of a once-extensive system of 'Fluvial Tablas,' unique floodplain ecosystems in the heart of the Iberian Peninsula. This remarkable wetland forms where the slightly saline waters of the Gigüela River meet the fresh water of the Guadiana River, flooding the flat La Mancha plain. This merging of waters creates a handy microclimate and a lush ecosystem dominated by dense reed beds and marsh plants. For countless waterbirds, especially ducks, herons, and rare migratory birds, Daimiel is an indispensable nesting and wintering site. Despite the constant threat posed by agricultural overexploitation of the aquifers, this Ramsar site is intensely protected and made accessible to visitors via scenic wooden boardwalks.

Getting there
Easily reachable by car from nearby towns in the Castile-La Mancha region, with clear signage directing visitors to the entrance. A modern visitor center serves as the primary gateway to the accessible boardwalk trails.
📅
Best season
Spring and autumn are the peak seasons for visits, as migratory bird populations are highest and water levels are usually optimal. Summer can be extremely hot and dry, while winter gives quiet days for dedicated birdwatchers.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The terrain is entirely flat and exceptionally accessible, featuring a network of well-maintained wooden boardwalks over the wetlands. Observation hides and small islands are connected by these paths, making navigation very easy.
