Sierra Morena (Spain)

Weather…

The Sierra Morena presents itself as a prominent, elongated mid-elevation mountain region that forms an essential natural and historical border in southern Spain. It separates the vast and arid plateau of the Meseta Central in the north from the fertile, lower-lying depression of the Guadalquivir valley in the Andalusia region. The mountain range extends across the southern half of the peninsula and was geologically formed primarily by the tectonic uplift of the southern edge of the ancient Hesperian Massif. With Bañuela as its highest peak, the mountain chain reaches a modest elevation of only 1332 meters, but it captivates with its rugged landscape of gentle hills, dark slate rocks, and dense oak forests. Historically, the Sierra Morena gained great importance due to its rich mineral deposits, particularly lead, copper, and mercury, which were intensively mined by the Romans back in antiquity. Today, the isolated valleys represent the most important and largest refuge area for the critically endangered Iberian lynx.
