The Plaza de España, located in the idyllic Maria Luisa Park in Seville, is one of Spain's most spectacular architectural ensembles. Designed by architect Aníbal González as the main pavilion for the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition, it represents the pinnacle of Andalusian Regionalism. The semi-circular plaza, 200 meters wide, symbolizes Spain's embrace of its former colonies and is oriented toward the Guadalquivir River. Running along the curved brick facade are 48 alcoves beautifully decorated with Azulejos (ceramic tiles), each representing a Spanish province with its historic crest and map. A pretty 500-meter-long canal sweeps through the plaza, crossed by four richly decorated bridges that symbolize the historic kingdoms of Spain. This fairytale setting has served as a backdrop for several major Hollywood movies.

Visiting
Plaza de España is a public square and freely accessible at any time; you can admire the semicircular building and the colorful tiles of the alcoves. A boat ride on the small canal is possible, as is visiting the adjacent María Luisa Park.
Typical hours
The square itself is open 24/7, but the boat rental and exhibition rooms in the buildings have typical daytime opening hours. Access to the square is unrestricted, so you can also visit it in the evening.
Photography
Photography is allowed everywhere in the square; the colorful tiles of the provincial alcoves offer fantastic subjects. For the best shots, come early in the morning when the square is still empty.
Time needed
A stay at Plaza de España usually lasts between one and two hours, depending on how thoroughly you examine each alcove. With a boat ride on the canal, plan for about two hours in total.

Getting there
Plaza de España is reachable on foot from Seville's center in about 20 minutes. By bus, lines C1, C2, 34, and 38 go to the Avenida de Portugal stop.
Insider tip
Come early in the morning to have the square almost to yourself and take the best photos without crowds. Late afternoon light is especially nice for pictures of the tiles.
