Corbera d'Ebre (Spain)

Weather…

The ruined village of Corbera d'Ebre in the province of Tarragona serves as a poignant, unbuilt memorial to the atrocities of the Spanish Civil War. In July 1938, the town became the epicenter of the bloodiest and longest military engagement of the war: the Battle of the Ebro. For over 115 days, fierce fighting raged here between the troops of the Republic and Franco's Nationalist forces. The constant artillery shelling and brutal aerial bombardments by the German Condor Legion and the Italian Air Force reduced almost the entire village to rubble. After the war, the decision was made not to rebuild the destroyed historical center on the hill, known as the "Poble Vell" (Old Village), but rather to leave it exactly as it was destroyed in 1938 as a silent indictment of war. The surviving residents built a completely new settlement at the foot of the hill. Today, the skeletal ruins of the houses and the Church of Sant Pere, now protected by a modern glass roof, provide visitors with a deeply moving lesson on the destructive power of ideological conflict.
